What are the activities and tasks given to you during this
month?
For my internship, I am working as an administrator in a high
school for boys. In this month, I was responsible for
performing two tasks. These are:
Task(s)
i.
ii.
New skill(s)
Meeting(s)
Difficulty/ Challenge(s)
Learning
Updating guidelines and regulations regarding
attendance and absence
Managing communication with parents and handling
complaints.
What skills did you learn through the month?
I learned to be an active listener. This is because when I
listen well, I get more information. I will get the full benefit
of the in-depth knowledge of the parents on their children.
Doing that sends a message to the parents that I value their
experience, ideas and opinions and also that I am taking their
concerns seriously.
How many meetings did you attend?
I have managed to attend 8 meetings throughout the month.
What are the difficulties you had this month?
One difficulty that I faced is the lack of parental
understanding. This is due to the fact that parents don’t see
the importance of them being involved in the issues the
students face at school. Some parents also feel that they lack
the skills and knowledge to help with the education of their
children.
How did you overcome these difficulties?
To deal with this difficulty, I communicated with the parents
using their preferred languages. I also had to increase the
transparency from the administration side and also increase
parent engagement.
What did you learn from completing the tasks
College of Administration and Finance Sciences
I have learned that I should personalize interactions. This is
because no two students are the same and no two parents are
the same. Thus, how I share and discuss with the parents
must be individualized and tailored to their child. I have
learned that each student has their unique areas of
opportunities, strengths, wants, needs and challenges. Thus,
the communication with the parents should reflect the unique
traits for the students.
What did you want to learn more?
I wanted to learn how to address concerns with a problemsolving approach. This is an approach that involves
identifying the problem for the complain launched,
brainstorm solutions for the problem. After that, I should
jointly with the parents make an evaluation of the pros and
cons of each solution. Then we will decide on the solution to
try and then implement the solution. After that, the solution
should be reviewed. I would like to learn and perfect this
approach.

month?
Task(s)
For my internship, I am working as an administrator in a high
school for boys. In this month, I was responsible for
Scheduling an administration meeting with teachers.
What skills did you learn through the month?
One skill that I learned through the month is how to develop
New skill(s)
an agenda. This is ensuring that we have a layout of the
meetings, schedule who will be speaking, how long each
meeting will take and how each speaker will speak.
How many meetings did you attend?
Meeting(s)
I have managed to attend 5 meetings throughout the month.
What are the difficulties you had this month?
i.
Trying to find a time when everyone is available to
ensure that most of the teachers attend the meetings.
Difficulty/ Challenge(s)
ii.
Another challenge that I faced is deciding on the
length of the meeting.
How did you overcome these difficulties?
College of Administration and Finance Sciences
i.
The challenge of trying to find a time when everyone
is available can be solved by making use of meeting
scheduler apps. These apps may help to find the
available times among the teachers and thus help in
setting the most appropriate time.
ii.
The challenge of deciding on the length can be solved
by making a meeting agenda and planning on the
topics to be discussed in advance which will help in
predicting the time for the meeting.
What did you learn from completing the tasks
I learned that to ensure that the meeting is successful, I
should be able to share the agenda in advance. This means
that the teachers have enough time to prepare for the meeting
and thus, come to the meeting ready to discuss the topics.
Learning
What did you want to learn more?
I want to learn more on following up after meetings. This is
to ensure that every person who attended the meeting is clear
on the next steps and that any action items are both assigned
and completed on time. This will also entail sending a
summary of the meeting minutes to attendees.
