Rejecting and failing to reject the null hypothesis

Journal: Rejecting and Failing to Reject the Null Hypothesis

Just because two or more values are different does not mean that they are different in a statistically significant manner. Researchers rely on the p values that are generated for each of their statistical tests to determine significance. If the p value is larger than the alpha, then they are not different in a statistically significant manner, and therefore the values are not considered different. In this journal activity, consider these concepts in terms of the differences between null and alternative hypotheses, and discuss this question: What is the difference between failing to reject the null hypothesis and having evidence to support the alternative hypothesis?

Journal activities in this course are private between you and your instructor. Journal activities are designed to help you make meaningful connections between the course content and the larger goals of this course. While a certain level of informality is permitted, proper grammar, spelling, and APA citations are required. Your journal post should reflect academic rigor.

Journals in this course are graded individually.

For the journal assignments in this course, you will be relating course concepts to your own personal experiences, sharing personal opinions and viewpoints, and engaging with course concepts and materials at a deeper, more reflective level. Approach these activities as (a) an opportunity to reflect upon and apply what you learn each week, and (b) an opportunity to share your knowledge and expertise based on your educational and professional experiences in the past.

Prompt

For each journal assignment, the following critical elements must be met:

Fulfills all requirements in the individual prompt

Provides relevant application of course concepts

Supports ideas and observations with examples from personal or professional situations

What to Submit

Each journal assignment should be 1 to 2 paragraphs in length. Submit assignment as a Word document with double spacing, 12- point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins.
